10 Insider Tips From a Wedding Photographer That Can Transform Your Day
You’ve likely spent hours scrolling Pinterest, reading wedding blogs, and making lists of must-haves — but what about the advice no one tells you until it’s too late?
As full-time wedding photographers with 10+ years of experience and hundreds of weddings under our belts, we’ve seen it all. From joyful tears and golden-hour magic to rainy surprises and timeline chaos — we’re here for it.
So here are 10 little-known but super helpful tips only your wedding photographer will think to tell you (but you’ll be so glad we did):
1. Plan Your Ceremony Light Like a Pro
If you have the option, time extra couple photos for 1 hour before sunset. This allows for perfect natural light during your couple photos, Trust us — golden hour is magic.
2. Consider an 'Unplugged Ceremony'
Ask guests to put phones away during the ceremony so we can capture your faces — not their screens. You won’t regret it, and you’ll have clearer, more heartfelt photos.
3. Prep a Tidy Getting-Ready Space
A calm, clutter-free room = better photos. Try to keep bags, water bottles, and clothes in one corner so your prep photos focus on you, not the laundry pile.
4. Add Buffer Time to Everything
Weddings never run exactly to schedule — and that’s okay. But a little extra time built into hair/makeup, the drive, and group photos makes everything feel calmer.
5. Group Photos Go Faster with a List (and a Helper)
Write a short list of essential group combinations and assign a bridesmaid/groomsman to round people up. It makes the whole process way quicker (and more fun).
6. Don’t Skip the Food
You’re running on adrenaline — but you’ll feel better and look better in photos when you’re nourished. Eat something. And maybe stash a granola bar in your bag too!
7. Pack a Spare Pair of Shoes
Comfy shoes mean you’ll move more freely for your couple portraits and enjoy the dance floor even more. Bonus points for cute white trainers or boots.
8. It’s Okay to Cry — Really
Tears are beautiful. If you’re emotional, don’t hide it. Those moments of raw joy and connection often make the most powerful photos.
9. Let Go of Perfection
The best weddings are the real ones. Windblown hair, unexpected rain, laughter during the vows — these are the memories you’ll treasure most.
10. Trust Your Photographer (We’ve Got You)
When we say “Let’s take a detour into that golden light” or “Just ignore the camera for a second” — we’re working toward your story. Trusting us means we can capture the magic in the most natural way.
